THE PROCESS
"Everyone we met and worked with was great! Very knowledgeable, great with kids, keep parents informed and truly care about our family and our child’s progress. Highly recommend them!" - N. G.
PHONE CONSULTATION
Call our office for a free phone consultation with one of our directors. We will address your concerns and questions as well as gather information to get a whole picture of your child so we can make the appropriate recommendations based on your child's needs. We collaborate with other professionals and make referrals as needed.
EVALUATIONS
We provide in-depth diagnostic evaluations to determine if your child's speech, language and/or reading performance is within the expected range for his or her age and grade. The evaluation consists of a battery of standardized diagnostic tests as well as non-standardized testing and observation to gain a complete assessment of the child's abilities. Interpretation of testing is considered in conjunction with information about the child supplied by the parents. Following the evaluation, a parent conference is scheduled (without the child present) in order to give a complete explanation of the testing and our findings, and to make specific recommendations. If your child's performance is below expectation levels, speech/language therapy and/or reading intervention is recommended and goals/objectives for treatment are presented. A formal report is written following the parent conference and a copy is sent to the parents and to any other professionals upon parent request.
TREATMENT
Children are seen for treatment on an individual basis, usually for 30-60 minute sessions depending on your child's age and specific needs, as determined from the evaluation. Goals and treatment activities are individualized for each child. Games are often used to make learning more fun and to provide reinforcement. Homework is assigned when your child is ready to practice a skill on his/her own, but with the parent available to help.
Group treatment is occasionally recommended for children who need to practice their skills in a group setting. Intensive reading camps and language groups are offered during the summer.
PARENT INVOLVEMENT
We believe parents are an important part of treatment. We encourage parents to observe your child's evaluation, either in the room (for very young children) or in an observation room where parents can watch and listen through the one-way mirror. During therapy, we again encourage parents to observe sessions and sometimes to participate in therapy directly. After each session, parents are given information about your child's progress during the session. Home practice is often assigned between sessions to help your child make faster progress.
